Chinese silk for British Royal Wedding, ZSTU adhering to Silk Culture

British Prince William’s royal wedding to Kate is staged on April 29th. In Zhejiang China, a present together with much blessing is delivered for the wedding. A presentation ceremony of the gift, a set of white silk bedding produced by a noted textiles enterprise in Huzhou, is jointly attended by students from both University of Manchester and ZSTU.

It is learned that the set of bedding was handmade with silk, one representing aspects of Chinese culture, and decorated with valuable pearls, worth around 500,000 RMB.

In order to make Chinese silk culture better known internationally, ZSTU stages “The Journey into Chinese Silk Culture and Textiles Industry”, and invites foreign students from School of Materials at University of Manchester to pay a visit to China. During the period, ZSTU and University of Manchester students visited several well-known textile enterprises in Huzhou, home to silk, and made field study on silk processing. The event is supposed to present Chinese established silk culture to foreign students.

Dr. Claire Anderson from School of Materials of the university stated, when they first arrived, they had little idea of Chinese silk industry, but the exquisite schedule made by ZSTU enabled them to visit factories, watch the entire process from peeling of silkworm cocoons, to reeling, weaving and dyeing. “There are no such factories in England. It is a special experience.” she says.

In addition to introducing silk culture to foreign students, This year’s cultural festival places more weight on promoting students’ practical abilities, an investigation into the silkworm environmental protection is organized, and young mulberry trees are brought in from local sericulture bases which are to be claimed by teachers and students, and planted around the School of Materials and Textiles, as a part of “ZSTU in Green”, a university-wide tree planting activity.

Besides, students from the both universities visited the Hangzhou Silkworm Egg Production Station in Qibao Hangzhou, and experienced the cultivation of mulberry trees and raising of silkworms.

It is learned, after the presentation ceremony, the gift is to be delivered to British Royal family in care of British Embassy.
